One of the many things that makes Urbandale unique is our year-round elementary school found right in the heart of UCSD. Any family living within UCSD boundaries, or living outside UCSD boundaries who apply for open enrollment, can choose to attend our year-round school located at Karen Acres Elementary. Bus transportation is available anywhere within district boundaries outside of the Karen Acres walk zone.

“Year-round” means we’re able to provide even more learning opportunities throughout the year, but it does not mean that students go to school every day of the year. Karen Acres is in session the same number of days as elementary schools on the traditional year calendar.  Our year-round calendar provides:

• a full six-week break in the summer,
• a two-week fall break,
• a full week at Thanksgiving,
• an extra week at spring break,
• and a week in May.

This schedule gives everyone a chance to reset and refresh.  Families share they love the opportunity to travel or visit family when travel costs are cheaper. As a school, we recognize the benefits to both our student and staff emotional well-being, and the breaks are placed strategically to give everyone time to refresh and then come back together with energy and excitement.  On most breaks, Karen Acres offers optional, theme-based programming for a small fee. This provides families additional childcare and gives kids fun, hands-on learning experiences that include fantastic field trips.
