Announcing Director of Athletics and Activities February 2025

Announcing Our Director of Athletics and Activities

Over the past three months, we’ve had the privilege of hearing the utmost praise from stakeholders throughout our District for the exemplary work of our Interim Director of Athletics and Activities, Mr. Jared Power. Guided by feedback from students, coaches, staff, and families, Mr. Power has demonstrated exceptional leadership that fully supports the needs of students and furthers the mission of J-Hawk Athletics and Activities.

As we know, this is a critical time in our Athletics and Activities Department as our District and School Board weigh conference affiliation options. Now more than ever, it is vital to have a fully dedicated leader to provide consistency, stability, and vision.

Following a comprehensive review of prospective applicant submissions for the Athletic/Activities Director (AD) position, the foremost applicant became abundantly clear. With numerous AD job openings throughout the greater metro area, we wanted to secure the most highly qualified candidate. This is why we’re pleased to share that Mr. Jared Power has accepted the position of UCSD Director of Athletics and Activities.

Power Jared“I am thrilled to continue serving our community in this capacity,” said Power. “Since assuming the interim role back in November, I’ve had the opportunity to have conversations with many coaches and directors, school staff, community members, parents and guardians, and students. One of the consistent themes in many of the conversations has been the potential to do great things for our current and future J-Hawks. There are a lot of people invested in the success of our students who participate in athletics and activities. When our family moved to Urbandale five years ago, we chose Urbandale over other larger districts in the Metro because we felt like this was the district that could provide a big school feel while still providing many opportunities for our kids to participate in multiple sports and activities. It’s one of the things that makes Urbandale truly unique, and I’m excited for the future and the opportunity to help lead the way forward.”

Prior to serving as our Interim Director of Athletics and Activities, Power served as one of our two Deans of Students at Urbandale High School for two years. Prior to that, he served as a Student Engagement Coordinator, Behavior Strategist, and Special Education Teacher at Goodrell Middle School for Des Moines Public Schools, an Elementary Principal in the Chariton Community School District, a Special Education Teacher in the Johnston Community School District, a Special Education and English Language Arts Teacher at Woodward Academy, and an English Language Arts Teacher and At Risk Coordinator at Moravia Community School District.

Mr. Power holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Drake University, a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education and Athletic Program Management from Morningside University, a Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program from Buena Vista University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising from Iowa State University.

Please join us in officially welcoming Mr. Power as the UCSD Director of Athletics and Activities.
