MY GRADING PHILOSOPHY
-
My purpose for grading is firstly for the traditional motivational reason. I create a goal that I feel students should achieve and the grades represent how successfully students achieved that goal. These goals are based in the National Visual Arts Standards which are supported by the state ofIowa and this district. The audience for these grades are students, parents, administration, and the public (employers) at large. My goal is to clearly and systematically create and explain the expectations for getting an A in my class and I do this through rubrics. Most if not everything graded in my classes is done with a rubric that clearly spells out how the grade was arrived at. These rubrics are available and coveredbefore projects commence.Late work is not usually penalized in my class. Students turn in work when we move on to the next project. If it is not completed the student has until the Friday before finals to turn in everything without penalty. At some point, (a week or so) after I collect the assignments and they are graded I do put in zeros to help motive students to get late work turned in.
Students also have the option to redo assignments that they are not happy with their grade.
