World Food Prize 2023 Iowa Youth Institute news

UHS Students Develop and Present Global Food Security Solutions During World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute

Congratulations to Lilly Hill and David Mawia who were named Borlaug Scholars and earned $1,000 scholarships to Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture & Life Sciences for their participation in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute on April 24, 2023.  Lilly and David wrote research papers about solving food security challenges in Yemen and Myanmar, presented their work to panels, and learned from global experts to earn this distinction.

“Although the IYI program isn’t widely known, the experience is unforgettable,” said Hill. “Getting to walk on campus and experience a snippet into the day of a college student is by far my favorite part. You get a sense of independence and feel like a true Hunger Fighter.”

The Iowa Youth Institute is a life-changing experience at Iowa State University where high school students engage with leading experts on critical global challenges, participate in hands-on activities, and explore exciting ways to make a difference in Iowa and around the world. Since 1994, over 2,000 Iowa high school students and 400 teachers from across the state have participated in the Global Youth Institute. In addition, more than 200 Iowa high school students have traveled to Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East through the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship program to work alongside renowned scientists at leading research centers.

UCSD congratulates Lilly and David for earning this exceptional recognition and scholarships. Incredibly well-done! We are #proudofU!

This opportunity is open to any student; if you’d like to participate next year, contact Mrs. Forristall at bairdforristallc@urbandaleschools.com.
